The San Francisco 49ers left their 38-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers with some injury issues, but head coach Kyle Shanahan had some positive news about quarterback Brock Purdy during his conference call on Monday.
Shanahan told reporters that Purdy had easy throws on Monday and the pain didn't return to his shoulder, which is a good sign that his chances are getting better before Week 13. Purdy missed Week 12 due to a shoulder injury sustained in Week 11 against the Seattle Seahawks. He had limited practice in Week 12 and then left Friday due to the injury report.
This week he will have a rest day on Tuesday and will have the opportunity to train again on Wednesday.
With the 49ers hoping to be on life support after the season, Purdy's health could be the determining factor going forward as to whether they have a chance to fight their way back into the playoffs. The fact that he made positive progress on Monday is a good first step in getting him back.
The updates on defensive end Nick Bosa and Trent Williams were less optimistic. Shanahan said both are still in day-to-day life, although their status for Week 13 is still uncertain.
Shanahan also had updates on the players who played in Sunday's game.
Two offensive linemen, left guard Aaron Banks and right guard Dominick Puni, were tackled during the contest. Banks has a concussion. Puni has a shoulder problem and the team is waiting for an MRI.
Defensive tackle Jordan Elliott is also in the protocol for a concussion after leaving the game early.
Cornerback Deommodore Lenoir is also dealing with knee problems that required an MRI scan. The 49ers are waiting for these results. Lenoir has been their best defender this season, and losing him would be a huge blow to their secondary. If he can't go, rookie Renardo Green would likely move up to the spot, with Isaac Yiadom and possibly Charvarius Ward taking the starts on the outside. After a long absence due to a personal tragedy, Ward is still working his way back. However, according to Shanahan, Green continues to suffer from a neck injury.
The injuries have been tough for San Francisco in Green Bay. Things could be even worse in Week 13 when they visit the Buffalo Bills on Sunday Night Football.
