Lions lose rookie DL Mekhi Wingo to season-ending injury

The Detroit Lions defense took another hit to the depth chart with the news that rookie defenseman Mekhi Wingo is out for the remainder of the 2024 season.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell announced that Wingo, a sixth-round rookie out of LSU, will miss the remainder of the year with a knee injury. Wingo left Thursday's win against the Chicago Bears in the second half and did not return.

“Wingo will be out, he's done for the season,” explained Campbell. “He probably needs surgery. That’s another one.”

On the bright side, Campbell believes Wingo will be ready for the start of the 2025 season.

“I hate this for him, but everything will be clean and he will be healed for next year. That’s good news,” Campbell continued on Wingo.

Wingo joins linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez as Lions defensive backs who suffered season-ending injuries confirmed in the Thanksgiving game.

The Wingo injury sheds light on why the Lions poached DL Jonah Williams from the Los Angeles Rams' practice squad.
