Tilak Varma registers maiden T20I century in Centurion against South Africa

The visitors lost Sanju Samson on the second ball of the match and after that the duo of Abhishek Sharma and Tilak took care of business and put together a 107-run partnership in just 50 balls, giving India a helping hand early on. The duo did not shy away from playing shots that put the Proteas under pressure.

Abhishek departed after scoring 50 attacking runs from 25 deliveries and Tilak went on to play a brilliant knock. Even when the visitors lost wickets at short intervals, the 22-year-old did not change his style of play and eventually recorded his maiden century in T20 internationals. He kept up with the momentum and hit 107 runs off 56 deliveries as India scored 219 runs in the first innings.

The batting unit had a tough time in the second T20I at Gqeberha and needed something special in the third game. Except for Tilak, all the other batters struggled to get going cricket-players/suryakumar-yadav/” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Suryakumar Yadav scored just 1 while Hardik Pandya made 18 and Rinku Singh scored eight runs off 13 balls. Tilak's innings was therefore extremely important, otherwise the Men in Blue could have struggled again.

Meanwhile, after the innings, Tilak revealed that he felt good about getting the runs, especially after an injury. He added that the wicket was split in two and it was a challenge to bat early on.

“Incredible feeling to come back this far after an injury. The wicket was split in two and was a challenge to begin with. After a while things went well. I kept my form while playing the shots. Both of us (he and Abhishek Sharma) were under pressure. Today's shocks are important for us. Our spinners are bowling well. 200-210 is what we were looking for and we got it. Hopefully we can defend that,” Tilak said after the innings.
